FAQ

The Benefits of Prenatal Massage

  • Massage is a natural means of processing the physical and emotional stress of the pregnancy. The best reason, and for many the only reason needed is it simply it feels wonderful. It is the perfect way to provide for oneself at a time when the body experiences significant stress.

  • A time tested method of utilizing conservative treatment to help manage many of the minor discomforts that are commonly reported during the course of a pregnancy. Massage can have a positive impact on many symptoms., including relief from muscular and joint aches and cramps, headaches, heartburn, fatigue, and circulatory issues.

  • Prenatal massage benefits more then just the mother. Improved circulation, improved lymphatic flow, and improved rates of numerous metabolic processes, will support a healthier in-utero environment.

  • Regular prenatal massage can help the body maintain a posture that is efficient at balancing the large structural changes that occur during pregnancy.

  • Massage is helpful in preparing the musculo-skeletal system for the process of childbirth. A healthy muscular system is integral for a healthy delivery.

Common Causes of Back Pain During Pregnancy:

A hormone is sent thru the bloodstream of the pregnant woman called relaxin. This hormone impacts the ligamentous structures of the skeleton which normally act to provide stability or strength to the skeletal structure. The pelvis expands, spinal curves become accentuated as the body prepares for delivery. The muscular system tries to hold tighter to make up for the increased instability, muscles become fatigued as they are under increased demand, resulting in pain.

Your body has spent years perfecting its responses to your movements and postures. Along comes pregnancy and your center of gravity changes. This change occurs gradually but that does little to diminish the significance of this shift. Initially the upper back is taxed as the size and weight of the breast tissue increases. Later in the pregnancy, the lower back is challenged. Every sit, stand, lay down, get up, bend, reach and step is harder then it has ever been before.

If poor postural habits were not causing pain prior to a pregnancy, the increased stress on the body will frequently bring poor postural habits under a microscope. A tight right shoulder from too much computer work can feel like a knife in the shoulder blade during pregnancy. A back that would feel a little tight after a movie can now be shooting pain down the leg.
